On July 8th, people of the Elk Valley are invited to participate in a golf tournament, which raises funds and awareness for Parkinson's Disease. Merl Shelley, the event organizer, came up with the idea to start the tournament last year. With over 70 people who showed their support, the tournament was such a huge success it more than doubled the original fundraising goal. “Our goal was $2500, and we raised $5260 last year.” said Shelley. The funds raised from this event are donated to the Parkinson Society of British Columbia for research, community awareness, and education.

The neurodegenerative disease affects 1 in every 500 Canadians. When cells die in the brain that produce dopamine, a chemical which carries the nerve signals that control movement, symptoms for Parkinson's Disease appear. Currently there are no cures for Parkinson's, but medications and surgeries may help to lessen the symptoms, which include tremors, impaired balance, and stiffness.

The Elk Valley Parkinson’s Golf Tournament welcomes all ages and abilities to come out and participate. “It's a fun event and there's no scorekeeping, so you don't need to bring anything fancy.” said Shelley. The tournament begins at 10:00am on Saturday, July 8th. A ticket for the tournament is $30, which includes 9 holes, and a lunch meal of burgers, salads, and desserts. A sign-up sheet is available at the Sparwood Golf Course for the tournament, but everyone is welcome to show their support.

To learn more about the tournament, contact Merl Shelley at 250-425-5115. For more information on other events for Parkinson's, visit www.parkinson.bc.ca.
